Burl Mortar with Pestle

Beautiful burl mortar and a pestle that was with it when found; a rare form with flared sides that was likely used to grind herbs and spices in and possibly to mix medicines. Beautiful figure, 4 1/8" D across top, tapering down gracefully to a narrow waist and then back out to 2 3/4" across the base; 2 3/8" tall. Circa 18th century. The pestle almost certainly was not original to the mortar. (Note: the piece also could have been employed as a table salt with a small serving spoon, but it clearly saw use as a mortar). Ex Roger Bacon. (CP-37)
