- Full bodied crow decoy with
tack eyes. Paint original, with expected wear from use. Circa
late 19th century to early 1900's. From the Hamilton Bay area
of Ontario. It was placed on a finial at some point that has
an old red wash. Displays beautifully. Bird is 15" long
and stands 20" high on the pedestal. Crows are notorious
for eating farmers' crops and have long been hunted in an effort
to reduce the damage. Decoys like this one (without the pedestal,
of course), would be placed in a field near a hedgerow where
the farmer and/or his friends would be concealed with their shotguns
and would shoot the the crows when they came into range. Crows
are not the best table fare, but most farmers had favorite recipes
that made them passable and they rarely went to waste. Most crow
decoys were silhouette style and full-bodied decoys are uncommon.
