- Finely hand-carved paddle
reputed to be for a child. Purchased in Vermont. Handle is stained
dark brown and bears the carved initials CEP Jr, suggesting that
the owner was a male. Additional faintly defined initials appear
near the tip of the paddle. The paddle has a nice spline extending
from the handle down into the blade on both sides which provides
more strength, a technique developed by Native Americans. There
was a very small shallow chip at one side at the tip of the blade
which has been filled in and is unnoticeable. This paddle would
look great on the wall in a rustic camp or cottage. Circa probably
first quarter of 20th century, although it could be earlier.
47 1/2" long and blade is 5 3/4" wide. (CM-27)
