Early whaling tool, probably used for "flensing" (separating) blubber from a whale. Cast iron with a wooden handle. The mid shaft protuberance most likely was used as a foot-hold to force the blades into the blubber. 50" long. This item probably dates to the late 18th - early 19th century and is believed to be American. A true survivor of a forgotten era."  (CS-13)
