I.O.O.R.M. Ceremonial Axe

Improved Order of Red Men (I.O.O.R.M.) ceremonial axe. 48"L x 20" W (at axe blade). In very good condition save for some wear and paint loss, as shown, and the tip of the piece is slightly blunted. This organization is a non-profit fraternal society dating its origin to 1765. It adopted the customs and terminology of the Iroquois Confederacy as an integral part of its fraternal practices. Despite it's arguably condescending and politically questionable title, the organization has always been dedicated to democratic principles and actively engaged in charitable initiatives, including support of Alzheimer's research and programs involving children with cognitive, intellectual and developmental deficits, including the Special Olympics. This axe is believed to date to the late 19th century. It is much less common than similar Masonic and Odd Fellows axes. Given its size, we doubt it was a parade axe; more likely it served as a wall display or hung over a lodge entrance. The reverse side has an inset area that probably fit a cleat to attach it to the wall. (CG-40)
