Native American Style Ladle With Decoration

Elegant carved Native American-style goose head ladle, with early, painted decoration in bowl interior and exterior, with the latter being more vibrant. There are multiple small raised and indented black dots throughout both sides of the bowl which extend in faint form onto the handle. These are not unattractive, but we concluded, after researching problems with finishes on wooden objects, that they represent "fish eye", something that can occur if lacquer is applied on an object that has some contaminant on its surface, such as grease or oil. In this case, the ladle was probably well used for soup and had some remaining oily residue. The handle, on the other hand, has only a slight amount of "fish eye" and that located near the bowl, as well as close to the handle, where a user would probably grip it with greasy hands. Circa probably 18th - early 20th century. (CQ-12)
