- Unique and extremely rare
mid-19th century paper bonbonniere (box for sweets) made in France
for the American market. The box base is encircled with American
eagles, which also appear on the collapsible carrying handle.
There is a fine Eglomise painting of a dog with a game bird in
its mouth on a transfer background done on convex glass on the
top. The painting is set on cut red velvet with gray silver foil
backing and bordered with gold paper beads. The interior of the
cover has a white pressed paper design of cherubs with musical
instruments and bears a signature in ink, presumably that of
the American owner, along with the date 1857. Apprx. 11
½"W x 5 ¾" Deep x 1 1/8" H. In
fine original condition with no repairs and only very minor wear,
some minor discoloration of interior white paper and loss of
some beads. There is a reflection of a window and a ceiling light
to the left of the dog in the lead photo and another of 2 lights
to the lower left of the dog in the second photo - our apologies.
